"It was a big clump of dirt," Rogers said after the game. "I didn'tknow it was there. They told me about, but it was no big deal."

Oh Kenny...such a liar. Just admit to it.

He's a cheater and as bad as Bonds in my book.

I say they strike out the win against the Yankees and replay the game. If the tigers win then they move on and replay his game against the A's. If they win that then they get to continue where they are.

Of course that's incredibly unrealistic and makes no sense.

The umpires are supposed to eject him in a situation like that, and I'm kind of surprised they didn't.
23rd-Oct-2006 05:21 am (UTC)
I agree. It's clearly in the rules. They also have evidence of him using it in the games against NY and Oakland too. I say if the Tigers win the World Series, he shouldn't get a ring.

Just admit to it.

I wish. I wonder what exactly MLB would do if he did... Of course he never will.

Where was this "dirt" in the '99 playoffs?
23rd-Oct-2006 05:39 am (UTC)
I didn't see the game, but what exactly is everybody pissed about?

He shut them out for 7 more innings.

That's like saying Barry Bonds hit HR's before he started juicing so no one should care about him juicing.

Does it bother anyone else that he has the same name as the singer? It sure bothers me a lot. Kenny Rogers, the singer, doesn't deserve to share his name with such a scruff like Kenny Rogers the pitcher.
I vote we make him change his name to the long form and he will from now on be

Surely it's not a coincidence that Kenny Rogers sung "The Gambler." Somewhere Pete Rose is happily counting his winnings on the Tigers and having a good laugh.

The fact that Rogers was so evasive when answering questions about it after the game doesn't sit right with me. If it was just some mud, why didn't he just say so immediatly afterwards. When I saw him interviewed on the field right after the game he avioded giving a direct answer at all and it wasn't until later that he came up with the "dirt" story. I trust the umps to make the call, but that's some sketchy business and will sully the win in many fans opinion.

I noticed that as well. He's asked about his hand and all he said was the umpires were talking about the time between innings.
23rd-Oct-2006 01:20 pm (UTC)
Wait---Are we accusing him of being of less-than-stellar character? Kenny Rogers? Really?

Honestly, I'm just disappointed that someone would - if he was, I'm not even going to make a judgement - cheat so badly. Seriously, you could see that from a mile away. If you're going to put sticky stuff on your hand, at least make it CLEAR.

Why wasn't he tossed? Well, if he had washed it off and the umps did not actually see it, touch it, and confirm it was pine tar, then... what can they do? Sure, they can be suspicious, but if there's no real proof... It's that whole 'innocent until proven guilty' thing.

Do I believe he might cheat? Certainly! People 'cheat' every day in every way if they think they can get away with it. You know, only driving 7 mph over the speed limit... taking 'natural' supplements... Coming in to work late, but still before your boss... But for goodness sake, at least be clever about it.

I think there's a lot of cheating going on, but, well, it's hard to prove so it's not going to stop. I think, if the Tigers do win the WS, this will just be 1985 for the Cards allllll over again. And we will never, ever, ever hear the end of it.

I really, really, really want to trust the umpires on this.

But damn, that doesn't really look like dirt.

I think it might be worth noting that most of this uproar is coming from fans of the A's, the Yankees, and the Cardinals. That's not to say it's not legitimate, but there may also be a little bitterness in there.

I want to believe that it was just dirt and the reason it's showed up more than once is that he grips the ball the same way every game and gets dirt in the same place. On the other hand, Kenny Rogers isn't exactly a paragon of virtue, so it wouldn't be a tough sell to convince me he was cheating. Regardless, the Tigers have clearly played better baseball than their opponents on days he's pitched in the postseason, so it shouldn't tarnish the wins. It will, but it shouldn't.
